HTML5 Woes

Being my first attempt at making a anything in game maker and doing it alone to boot, I am quite proud of it. I'd say 75% of what I wanted to implement in the game was implemented.

Unfortunately I overlooked the mandatory "HTML5" formatting rule and uploaded an executable which DQ'd my game. Which was heartbreaking after putting in so much work. I stepped away from game maker during the review process to reflect on my experience.

Yesterday I tried converting my game to HTML5 because I wanted people to try my game, and to give me feedback. But I quickly learned its not as simple as just changing the export type and clicking a button. Converting to HTML5 brought a whole new world of issues to the game, almost every fundamental feature was broken. The camera, the GUIs, the Layers, initialization and undefined variable issues everywhere... I have tried chipping away at getting it working again but alas this will take a lot of time to recode... Time I haven't decided if its work spending yet. It works perfectly as an executable and I may just have to leave it at that...

Special thanks to the few who offered to try the game once I was able to upload it as an HTML5.

Things I learned during the Jam were:

Make lists of what is realistic to complete by the deadline, and cross out things as they are finished. Update your list every day as you begin to realize unexpected delays or progressions.

If doing a game jam where web playable is required, DO NOT start making the game until you learn how to export into HTML5 and strictly do all your testing/debugging with it...

Try to maintain an artistic perspective, if doing a top down, choose between a directly above or angled look and stick to it on all sprites in the game. Also look into system specific color palettes like SNES/NES/SEGA for more nostalgic vibes that dont clash.
